A. Canada is a country in the northern part of North America. It includes ten provinces and three territories from the Atlantic to the Pacific and northward into the Arctic Ocean, covering 9.98 million square kilometres. It is the world’s second largest country by the total area. It borders with the USA. Ottawa is the capital city. Other big cities are Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.

B. In about 1000 BCE, the Scandinavians sailed to the lands which are the present-day Canada. Further European exploration of Canadian lands took place in 1497, when the Italian sailor John Cabot explored and claimed Canada’s Atlantic coast in the name of King Henry VII of England. In 1534, the French explorer Jacques Cartier explored the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and claimed it French.

C. Now Canada is a rich country and a member of G8. It is highly globalized and belongs to the top trading nations of the world. Canada’s import is equal to its export but Canada is a net exporter of energy. Canada used to be an agricultural state but now manufacturing, mining, and service sectors are highly developed. The main industries are forestry and petroleum.

D. Canada ranks first worldwide in the number of adults with a university degree. The Canadian government invests much in schools, colleges and universities. Students can study in both French and English. Children must go to school starting from the age 5−7 and up to the age of 16−18. A special research shows that Canadian children are especially good at mathematics, sciences, and reading.

E. Canadian literature is often divided into French and English language literatures, which are based on the literary traditions of France and Britain. Some of Canadian literature is viewed as top books. Canadian visual art is also quite popular. The most famous painter is Tom Thomson, the landscape artist. The main source of inspiration for Canadian art is certainly its beautiful nature.

Imagine that you are preparing a project with your friend. You have found some interesting material for the presentation and you want to read this text to your friend. You have 2 minutes to read the text silently, then be ready to read it out aloud. You will not have more than 2 minutes to read it.

People live much longer than most other animals, so human childhood also lasts a long time. Unlike baby animals, human children need many years to learn how to live on their own as adults. As children's bodies grow, so do their minds. This growth is called child development. It happens in many ways with the help of toys and games. Even schools use toys and games to teach kids. Children enjoy playing with toys.

A toy can be a simple ball, a game, or an expensive machine that uses the latest technology. Years ago most toys were made from wood and cloth. Today the most common material is plastic. Toys date back to ancient times. Scientists often find toys when they dig up old ruins. These include ancient balls, dolls, and toy wagons and boats.
