A. The Liffey is the river that flows in the center of Dublin, the capital of Ireland. Sometimes it is called Anna Liffey, from the Irish Abhainn na Life which means “River Liffey”. The famous Irish writer James Joyce turned it into one of the main characters of his novel Finnegans Wake  — Anna Livia Plurabelle  — both, the allegory of the river, and of all womankind and womanhood.

B. The Ganges is an important river in India. In addition to being the main source of water for millions of people who live along its course, the Ganges is sacred to Hindus and is worshipped as a goddess who is kind, forgiving and is the mother of all other gods. There is a belief in Hinduism that if a person bathes in the Ganges, all their sins will be forgiven.

C. For millions of years, rivers have been the source of life. Unfortunately, in the last two centuries, some of them have become so dirty that they can only bring disease and death. The Yellow River in China is one of them. All the factories and big cities located on its banks dump their waste into it, making its waters unsuitable not only for drinking, but even for industrial and agricultural use.

D. The Nile is the longest river in Africa. It is the river that made it possible for the Egyptian civilization to develop and prosper for several centuries amid the surrounding desert. Every year the waters of the Nile overflowed and made the land around it good for farming. Thanks to the Nile, ancient Egyptians could grow many crops, such as wheat, flax and papyrus.

E. The Delaware is an important river on the Atlantic coast of the United States. It supplies water for both Philadelphia and the city of New York. But it is not its economic impact that it is famous for. Every schoolchild in America knows it for its role in the American Revolution, when General Washington crossed it on Christmas morning in 1776 for a successful surprise attack on the British soldiers.
