In Britain Boxing Day is celebrated the day after Christmas. Traditionally on that day servants received gifts from their masters. These gifts were to thank them for their service. It used to be money, food or presents and the gifts were in boxes. At Christmas servants could visit their families at home and enjoy a day off. They took the boxes of gifts with them. So that is how Boxing Day started. Now the British usually spend this day shopping or watching TV and eating. It is a bank holiday so nobody works. Most big stores offer really large discounts and open very early on that day. People can also go for a walk and enjoy a frosty winter's day. Many British people collect things they don't need anymore and give them to charities on that day.
